"Black Tar Huts"

Black Tar Huts, Hastings depicts the historic net huts and fishing boats of Hastings, England. Traditionally used by fishermen to store and dry their nets and gear, the tall huts were coated in black tar to protect them from the coastal weather. Greca sets their dark, geometric forms against a brilliant blue sky, golden shore, and brightly painted boats. The sweeping nets at the right bring texture and movement to this lively portrait of a working waterfront.

Painted in water-mixable oil in August 2017. Signed and dated on the front; signed, dated, and titled on the reverse.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Virgil Greca is a contemporary painter and sculptor who lives and works in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His distinctive use of color and instinct for structure reflect his many years as an interior designer and the owner of his own furniture showroom. An avid art collector himself, Greca approaches his work with a practiced eye for composition, form, and beauty.

Virgil Greca’s expressive landscapes are composed through bold color, simplified forms, and strong, rhythmic contours. Rural roads, clustered houses, rolling fields, and working waterfronts are transformed into vivid arrangements of shape and pattern. With their compressed perspective and confident palette, the paintings balance a modernist sense of structure with the warmth and directness of folk art.
